What’s EfM?

September 15, 2009 by fatherjeff

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a 4-year Christian formation course that gives laypeople a solid theological foundation for the ministry of the Church. Anyone who is looking to deepen their understanding of the Bible, Church History, and Theology, while at the same time deepening their relationships with one another, are invited to an informational meeting about EfM on September 20 during the 9:45 Adult Bible Study. Sue Halmrast and Fr. Jeff, both trained EfM mentors, will give an overview of the program, the expectations of the class, and will answer any questions. We are looking to start an EfM group in January, with monthly “pre-classes” this fall. If you are interested, please let Fr. Jeff or Sue know!

Upcoming Youth Events

On September 27 at 2:00pm, the youth of St. Nicholas will be trekking up to St. Paul’s in Newnan for the first annual Diocese of Atlanta Youth 4-Square Tournament. In case you aren’t sure what 4-Square is, it’s an incredibly addicting game where 4 people stand in a square (hence, “4-square”) and try to get each other “out” by bouncing a ball into the squares their opponents are standing in. It is going to be super fun! This event will be a tournament by churches, so Fr. Jeff would love to have you all on his team! Even if you don’t want to play, you are encouraged to come along for the ride. Youth in grades 6-12 are invited! Read more

The Hiking Preacher Part 3

Long Leaf Loop

This is the third in a series of posts about my weekly hikes on the Pine Mountain Trail.

img_0409The good news about Labor Day is that you get a day off. The bad news is that it throws your whole week off. It’s been two weeks since my last hike, and in fact, almost that long since I did anything resembling exercise. So needless to say, I was a bit out of practice today. God has a sense of humor, because this hike happened to be the longest thus far (and might be the longest in the series, depending on how I’ve split up the trails). Read more

Election Reflection

Today I had my first experience of an election of a bishop. The Diocese of Georgia, the diocese that brought me up in the Church, elected their 10th bishop, the Rev. Scott Benhase, currently the rector of St. Alban’s in Washington, D.C.

Centering Prayer

Once again, my good friend Matthew Moretz, priest at Christ Church in Rye, New York, presents a lesson on the practice of Centering Prayer. I particularly like this one because the music he uses is by one of my favorite bands right now, Bon Iver.  Enjoy!

St. Nick’s Comicks

September 8, 2009 by fatherjeff
Filed under The Hiking Priest (Fr. Jeff's Blog)

There are a lot of things I am passionate about, but there is one thing that tops my list:

Comic books.

In fact, you may not know this, but before I heard God’s call to the priesthood, I was hoping to become a writer and artist of comic books. I have collected comics since I was in middle school (with a hiatus during college). I am mostly a Marvel Comics fan (and certainly have some opinions about Marvel’s recent acquisition by Disney), and even more specifically, I am an expert on all things X-Men. Read more
