Advent Devotional

One of my good friends, the Rev. Ben Rockwell, curate at St. Paul’s in Mobile, Alabama, had the great idea to make an Advent Devotional for his youth group and asked a host of his clergy friends to provide the individual entries. Ben sent them out to his kids this past weekend and to all of us who contributed.
I was so impressed and thought that while these were written for teenagers, they might be good for parents, youth, and practically anyone to do individually or as a family this Advent season. So, with Ben’s permission, I am offering them to you to use for your Advent reflections as you prepare for the coming of Christ into your own hearts. Ben organized them to be printed as a booklet, so for maximum readability, be sure to print it out. Enjoy!

Adult Education for 2010

Make adult education part of your New Year’s Resolution! In 2010, we have a new course for adults and a continuation of our already-offered opportunites.
First, we will begin a new series of courses beginning in January at our newly dubbed St. Nicholas Academy! Many of you are very hungry for continued Christian education for adults and with our Academy, we hope to provide just that.
In January, we will begin a 6-week study entitled Listening to Scripture: Strategies for Interpreting the Bible. This course is published as part of a program called Kerygma (Greek for “proclamation”). I used one of these curricula in a former parish and got a great response. The St. Nicholas Academy will be on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm starting January 5, 2010. Sue Halmrast and Fr. Jeff will lead the first course. All are welcome to attend the class. Required Resource Books will cost $18 per student, and you will need a study Bible like the Oxford Annotated Bible (NRSV) or the HarperCollins Study Bible (NRSV). To sign up for the first 6-week course, visit stnicholashamilton.org/signup or the signup board at the church. Read more

The Hiking Preacher Part 8

Dowdell Knob Loop
Approx. 4.3 miles, 2 hours, 15 minutes
This is the eighth in a series of posts about my weekly hikes on the Pine Mountain Trail.

This week, Dowdell Knob was open! I went on Tuesday rather than Monday because I had to get the bulletin and newsletter ready before Thanksgiving. It wasn’t quite as beautiful a day as it was last week, but it’s hard to mess up the view at Dowdell Knob! I really needed this hike after a stressful couple of days. I found myself getting grumpy and down, and once again I find that if I feel myself getting this way, it’s time to lean on the spiritual disciplines we have for ourselves. In my case, I had to get out on the trail, do some praying, and even write some thoughts down in my journal.

Rocky Point Parking Lot to Dowdell Knob intersection and back
Approx. 3.2 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes
This is the seventh in a series of posts about my weekly hikes on the Pine Mountain Trail.
I fully intended to do the Dowdell Knob loop today and what a beautiful day it would have been to be on that trail! I was disappointed, however, to find that the gate was locked, even though it was after 9:00 a.m. (the sign says it opens at 8:00). So I skipped ahead to the next hike, which was the connecting part of the PMT between the Dowdell Knob Loop and the Wolfden Loop. It’s not a very long hike, so doing a back-and-forth doesn’t take very long. The easiest way to approach this part is by starting at the Rocky Point parking lot and heading west.
Let me tell you, though, they don’t call this “Rocky Point” for nothing! Read more

Work Day on Saturday!

Don’t forget that Saturday will be a work day at the church from 10:00am to 2:00pm for our buildings and grounds. There are a few projects we want to accomplish:
Putting up a bulletin board in the hallway for sign-up sheets
Putting up a lock-box outside
Weeding the flower beds
Trimming the grass and clearing some of the ditches
Picking up trash along the road
Spreading mulch on the playground
Picking up sticks and debris
Raking leaves
If you could lend a hand, we would really appreciate the help. A light lunch will be provided. We want to especially tidy things up for Bishop Alexander’s visitation on December 6. Bring your own tools, gloves, and other implements of creation/destruction. We also need some gardening expertise to help direct those of us who consider ourselves “grunt workers.” See you Saturday!
