Youth Christmas Party 2009

This year’s Youth Christmas Party was a blast! Peggy and Doug Martin hosted at their home in Pine Mountain Valley. Everyone brought appetizers, which ended up being quite the feast! Terri Townsend led the youth in a ton of fun games including the Santa Suit Hunt, the Christmas Bow Challenge, Blindfolded Cookie Decorating, and Hide-and-Seek for Fr. Jeff. Throughout the night, the teens accumulated points to be used in the final game, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Dirty Santa, where they had gifts that they rotated whenever their special word from the story was said. Sheila Dixon took the littler ones and played Pictionary and other games with them, as well as making some beautiful Christmas ornaments. Afterwords, Father Jeff led a cold worship service on the back porch, reminding the teens of the discomfort Mary and Joseph must have felt being stuck out in a manger.
Many thanks to all the parents, youth leaders, and especially the youth who came and participated! It was a great night! Below are some pics of the event:
The Hiking Priest: The Shootin’ Priest

Between the ages of 5 and 11, my family and I lived in Clay County, Alabama. My father owned a funeral home half-way between Lineville and Ashland. These were some of our best days as a family (and some of our hardest). We all got to experience small-town living for the first time. While most of my family now prefers living in bigger cities like Augusta (with the exception of my oldest sister, who married a man from Clay County and still lives in rural Alabama), I like to think that it planted a seed in my heart for small towns, which I think is what brought me to Harris County in the first place. The Hiking Preacher Part 10

Wolfden Loop Part 2
WJSP Tower Parking Lot to Mile Marker 20 and back: 6 miles, 3 hours 15 minutes
This is the tenth in a series of posts about my weekly hikes on the Pine Mountain Trail.
I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that this is my last Hiking Preacher post. The good news is that I’ve gotten such a great response to it, that I decided to rename my blog The Hiking Priest! I changed it to “priest” because, even though I am a preacher, priest encapsulates more of who I am. This will definitely not be my last post about hiking, however, as I will continue my weekly hikes in preparation for my sermons. Today concluded my second trip on the PMT, and it’s definitely become part of my spiritual discipline. In fact, I can always tell if I’m having a bad week and directly connect it to the fact that I didn’t spend time with God on the trails.

Organ Transplant

No, not that kind of organ transplant! Although I’ve been resisting the urge to use the term “organ donor” numerous times.
For those who have not heard, God provided for us once again through the generosity of St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church in Smyrna. In November, I was at Diocesan Council when an announcement was made that an organ was on auction. The Vestry and I had been wondering what we might do to procure a new organ, so I approached the front table at Council and asked about the organ for auction. Bishop Alexander happened to be standing there, and warned me that that organ was not worth looking in to, but St. Benedict’s, a new congregation that had just bought a new organ for their new building, might have one available. As we prepare the schedules for Adult & Youth Readers, Lay Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, Greeters, Acolytes, Flower Guild, and Altar Guild for the beginning of the year to Easter, it’s a good time to sign up and get your name on the schedule! We ALWAYS have a need for more help in the leading of our services, so if you’re waiting to be asked to help, this is us asking! All are opportunities to deepen your own spirituality as well as helping the congregation deepen theirs. All are ways for you to contribute your gifts. We will train you in all of these areas, so fear not! Read more

We are in need of more children to be in our Christmas Pageant Christmas Eve. We still need a Mary, a Joseph, and some shepherds. We have 3 angels, a star and 2 animals!
Practice is after church this Sunday and will take only about 30 minutes. There are no speaking roles and nothing to memorize. We also need another narrator….from the youth. Thank you, Andy Butzon

Yesterday at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, we welcomed 7 “official” Episcopalians into our Church. Andy Butzon reaffirmed her faith, Abby Brown, Sheila Dixon, Sean Moody, and Brittany Vargas were all confirmed, and Laura Bailey and Anne Simpson were received into the Episcopal Church. All of them received the laying on of hands by Bishop Whitmore, which is the outward sign of the inward grace of the sacrament. Read more
