Vision Planning Day

April 28, 2010 by fatherjeff

St. Nicholas is a growing congregation, and as such, we are called to develop a vision for our future together. What kind of church do we want to become? What do we value as a congregation? What do we do really well? If our church were to vanish from the face of the earth, what kind of hole would we leave in the community? These are all common questions to ask as we make plans for the future.

During the last year, the Vestry has been working on developing this vision for St. Nicholas’ future.  Click here to see what we worked on. At our last Vestry Retreat, we were delighted to begin the process of developing a common vision with DaAnna Stringer. Da (pronounced “day”) is a corporate facilitator and listener who helps businesses and churches develop where they want to go in 10, 20, and 30 years.

We will gather on Saturday, May 15 from 9:00am to 3:00pm with Da at the church to develop this vision. The Vestry hopes to have as many people involved as possible. If you have high hopes for the development of our congregation, or if there’s something that you think needs to be in place with this vision, please come and let your voice be heard!

This is a congregational effort, so mark your calendar, as we gather on Saturday, May 15 for a day with Da!

The Fishing Priest

At the lakeThere’s a lot of stuff I like to do–read comic books, hike, draw, play guitar. But one of my occasional pastimes is fishing. I’m not quite sure how I started fishing. My parents never took us fishing when we were growing up. I guess my first experience with a rod and reel was at summer camp at Honey Creek in the Diocese of Georgia. The camp is on a tidewater creek off of the inter-coastal waterway. Honey Creek has a dock, so we used to spend a lot of time, especially when we were camp counselors, sitting on that dock and casting out into the deep water at high tide. So I cut my fishing teeth on catching mullet, catfish, toadfish, stingrays, and the occasional shark.

Only a few more days until Relay For Life! There are still many ways you can help! You can show up on Friday night at the Harris County High School football field at 5:00pm to help set up. We’ll be there all evening, so feel free to show up when you can! It’s a great time for fellowship and for meeting people in our community. We’ll also be meeting our friends from Christian Valley Church, who we are hoping to partner with on future outreach programs. If you are a cancer survivor, or have lost someone to cancer, then you know how important it is that we raise as much as we can for Relay For Life.

We are still in need of several items. (Please bring to the church any time before Friday.)
1. Sheets of woods to support our BBQ Grills. (3 feet by 4 feet or larger) 2 sheets please.
2. Coolers as many as possible
3. Squirt Bottles for BBQ Sauce (I am sure there is a technical name for these.)
Bake Sale Details
A bake sale items should be delivered directly to our booth at the football field.
1. Please prepare and price items for sale (baggies, Saran Wrap etc)
2. Please indicate presence of Nuts were appropriate.
3. In the past we have sold whole cakes. We can continue that, unsold cakes may be broken down by slice for sale.
Finally, if you are a cancer survivor, we are going to be recognizing you and saying special prayers for those who are currently fighting and surviving cancer at both services on Sunday.
If you have any questions, please contact Graham Horne at graham.horne@gmail.com. Join us as we fight to eradicate cancer!

Snake Chasing

This guy was on my porch. Yuck!

For those of you who think living in a small town is boring, I beg to differ.

Last week, I spent the morning working over at FOCUS. FOCUS is just up the street from our new house, and it was a lovely day, so I walked there and back. As I approached our house, I noticed something very odd on the front porch. At first glance, I figured it was some trash. With all the renovations we have done, our porch had collected a significant amount of trash. But we had done a great deal of work to clear it off, so I was surprised to see a black shape against the wall.

Once I got closer, I realized it wasn’t a piece of trash. Instead, there was a humongous snake trying to crawl up the wall of the front of our house near our kids’ room window! YIKES! Read more
