Hymn Festival With Bruce Neswick

ChoirThis Sunday, September 12,  2010 at 5:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1130 1st Avenue, Columbus, Ga., everyone is invited to a Hymn Festival!

What is a “Hymn Festival?” It is a celebration of the great songs of the Church. (That’s Church with a capital “C” meaning the Church Universal, not one denomination.) In the context of the Nicene Creed Bruce Neswick will take us through the church year - Advent to Pentecost - with scripture readings and hymn elaborations. The congregation will sing everything except two anthems of Bruce’s. The Mass Choir, including our very own St. Nicholas Choir, will add interest with original descants, re-harmonization’s and use of instruments. There will be great old hymns and some new ones that Bruce has written and are in the Episcopal Hymnal.

Bruce Neswick accompanied the St. Bartholomew’s Choir in Legacy. He was at St. Philip’s in Atlanta and now Director of Music at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in NYC. He is collegial, charming, has a wonderful fresh harmonic sense, an imaginative improviser and … he can play up a storm. You will love him. This is a great opportunity to see/hear/watch one of the leading Church musicians working today.

Studying The Shack
Adult Formation Sunday Mornings at 9:45am starting September 12

Though it has been a while since the church world was abuzz with commentary on The Shack, by William P. Young, it is chock- full of thought provoking conversations and ideas that beg discussion at any time… the “wastefulness of grace”, why God with all His power lets bad things happen, why we must forgive, etc.

Mollie Smith will be leading this 6-week class to hear of your experiences and responses to The Shack and hopes you’ll join the discussion.

Please RSVP to youth intern Cami Fanning at cameran.fanning@gmail.com by next Wednesday, September 8th! Feel free to bring your friends and encourage your fellow youth members to sign up! We’ll be leaving around 12:30 or 1:00. Adult drivers are needed, so if you can help out, e-mail Cami.

Give Louie A Hand!

lobsterfest-logoTwo work sessions are being planned to complete easy tasks for Lobsterfest.

On Thursday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. Sheila Dixon will host a get-together at her home (171 Manton Drive, Fortson) to assemble hand fans for Lobsterfest guests. This is an easy task and will be made easier by your participation. Sheila will have appetizers, wine and soft drinks to make this a fun evening.

On Saturday, September 11, from 9:30 – 12:00, the second session will be held at St. Nicholas to help wrap utensil packets and place raffle ticket stubs in vials for the drawing. A continental breakfast will be served.

Please plan to attend one of these sessions and give Louie a hand…he has none, you know. These are good opportunities to visit with members of the St. Nicholas family and a fun and relaxing way to help with Lobsterfest. You may sign up for one or both of these times in the narthex or by contacting Sheila at Sheila.a.dixon@delta.com or Linda Sawyer at hogback@wavetel.us .

Labor Day Meditation

September 4, 2010 by fatherjeff
Filed under The Hiking Priest (Fr. Jeff's Blog)

Below is offered by the Rev. Sam Candler, dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta. It is good food for the soul as we celebrate our lives’ work this weekend. Thank you all for laboring for God daily.

FOR LABOR DAY 2010

I live today because someone has labored. I live today because many, many, people have labored. On this Labor Day, I give thanks for them.

I eat today because someone served. Someone cooked. A grocer sold me the food. Or a local farmer at a farmers market sold it to me directly. A distributor supplied food to the grocers. A laborer tilled the soil. Another farmer planted and planned. Years before that, someone else prepared and cared for the very soil.

I wear clothes today that someone else sewed. Someone designed. Someone developed the store. Someone else marketed and advertised and kept the books and answered the telephones.
I wake up in a house that someone planned and built. Someone financed. Someone loaned. Someone brokered. I used money that someone paid me. Someone advised the investments. Someone did the banking. Someone else arrived to repair plumbing and wiring and appliances.
I drive a car that someone built. Someone marketed. Someone built the factory. I use public transportation, busses and trains, that someone else built. Someone planned. Someone else sold the bonds. Someone else drove.
I live in a city that someone manages. Someone leads. Someone polices. Someone administers and protects and cleans and keeps the utilities going. Someone teaches students who will be my neighbors and future laborers with me. Someone provided all the communication devices and techniques around us.
I am alive today because someone diagnosed my illness in a hospital. Someone nurses. Someone prescribes medicine and attends to medical emergencies and advises my future health.
I write these words on a computer that someone researched and developed. Someone labored for the electricity that powers it. I read a book that someone wrote. I read a newspaper that someone laid out. For all our industries, someone fabricated the designs, mined the metal, built the machines, and then recycled the metal. Someone developed the commercial building that houses offices for all these laborers. Someone sold the land.
My soul is inspired today because someone sang, someone else painted, someone wrote, someone kissed me. Someone preached, someone taught, someone challenged me.
I live a fruitful life because many, many people have labored. I know that they did not always labor for me in particular. Maybe they labored because they needed a job. Maybe they labored because they loved someone and wanted to help them. But their labor has also helped me.
All our labor, together, is what makes us a society, a culture, a civilization. I give thanks for that labor today, for each and every vocation that God has given to each and every one of us. For those without jobs, I pray for their quick relationships with a fruitful vocation. God wants each of us not just to have a job, but to have a vocation - a calling-through which we can be proud that we are serving the world. When our labor makes a positive difference in the world around us, we truly have a vocation; and vocations, working together, create a beloved community. I give thanks for those vocations this year. Thanks to each and every one of you who serve!

Signed, Sam Candler

The Dangerous Act of Worship

September 1, 2010 by fatherjeff

Tuesday Night Adult Education Returns September 7!

In his book, The Dangerous Act of Worship, Mark Labberton asserts that corporate worship shouldn’t merely point us upward toward God, but turn us outward as well, toward our neighbors.  He says worship should translate into transformed lives that care for the poor and the oppressed.  The Old Testament prophet Micah said to Israel, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”  (Micah 6:8)  If worship is the humble walk, where does doing justice and loving mercy fit?  What does Sunday worship mean to you come Monday?  Let’s talk about it!  Mollie Smith will be leading this class on Tuesday nights for 6 weeks starting September 7, at 6:30 pm., to discuss the meaning of worship at St. Nicholas and beyond. You can sign up for the class by visiting www.stnicholashamilton.org/signup or by visiting the bulletin board in the hallway. Copies of the book are $12.00, but are not required to take the class.
