dave-ramseyDear friends,

We live in some tough times. How does one remain faithful in the midst of economic hardship, job losses, and ever-increasing consumerism? As St. Nicholas continues to do the work God has called us to do, we have heard concern about personal finances in these troubling times. People in our community are struggling and are meeting financial struggles that they have never experienced before. We certainly can’t ignore these concerns.

Therefore, we are discerning the possibility of offering Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and would like your feedback. Dave Ramsey is a best-selling author and national radio show host who developed Financial Peace University after going bankrupt in his early 20’s.  As a new Christian, he wanted to find out exactly what Scripture had to say about money.  After learning that there are over 800 places in the Bible related to personal finance, Dave made it his life mission to help individuals and families experience true financial peace.

Financial Peace University (FPU) is a biblically based video curriculum that incorporates small-group discussions to encourage accountability and discipleship.  Taught by Dave on DVD, FPU is highly entertaining for everyone, with a unique combination of humor, informative financial advice and biblical messages.

FPU empowers churches to train their congregations to handle God’s money according to biblical principles.  In each two hour weekly session, the class watches an entertaining lesson on DVD and then engage in an active small-group discussion.  There are 13 lessons in all led by a group leader over 13 straight weeks. The cost for all materials is $93 per family/individual.  The average family that completes the class pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 during the 13 week period.  That’s an $8,000 turnaround!

In order to offer this course, we would need a committed group of people who would be interested in piloting it. We would plan to offer it not only for St. Nicholas parishioners, but for our community as well. It would be likely that we would offer the class on a weekday evening from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Please consider whether or not this would be beneficial to you and your family. Some questions to consider are:

Do think this is a good idea for St. Nicholas to sponsor?

Would you have an interest in participating?

Do know other families/individuals who might participate?

Does the cost justify the potential benefits?
