hope-chest-2Lenten Hope Chests at St. Nicholas

As a central part of our outreach ministry, we are conducting a hope chest campaign during Lent to collect funds for Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD).  Through FOCUS, CVEM, and other organizations, we are deeply involved in our local community.  The hope chest campaign is our primary effort to help fight extreme poverty and disease around the world.

Hope chests and coupons (to guide daily deposits to the hope chests and help us learn about the world’s needs) are available in the narthex. Each of the coupons reminds us of a luxury or blessing enjoyed in the US in contrast to corresponding needs or conditions in other parts of the world. In thanksgiving and remembrance of those in need, each coupon suggests an amount of change to put in the hope chest for that day. The amounts will be geared to children and adults are encouraged to give more when able.

We also have available ERD Lenten Meditation booklets for adults and older children. These are intended to help guide us to a deeper understanding of God’s purpose in our lives. This year’s meditations emphasize promoting health and fighting disease while preparing ourselves for healing.

On Easter Sunday, St. Nicholas will collect the hope chests, tally the results, send the total amount to ERD, and celebrate our collective fulfillment of our Baptismal Covenant to “seek and serve Christ in all

persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves.”

Episcopal Relief and Development

By 2015, ERD wants to cut global poverty in half. Rather than imposing “one size fits all” solutions, the agency supports unique local, long-term initiatives that address poverty, hunger, disease, economic development and disaster response. More information is available at www.er-d.org.
