Candidates for the 10th Bishop of Atlanta

We are quickly approaching the election of the 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Atlanta on June 2. As many of you know, this has been a long process for me, as one who was tasked with creating the slate of candidates, representing our convocation. I am extremely excited about what is to come, and think we have a solid group of candidates.
On June 2 at the election, I will be joined by Chris and Jackie Lintner as electors for the next bishop. As we pray and trust the Holy Spirit to guide us in this election, it’s also important for the people of St. Nicholas, as people of the Diocese of Atlanta, to give some feedback as to who you think would make a good bishop for our parish and for the diocese as a whole.
Next week, there are “walkabouts” across the diocese to meet the various candidates. If you can’t make one of those sessions, take a look at the following short introductory videos of the various candidates, read over the diocesan profile, and read the candidates’ essays, then let me know who you think would make a good bishop and why. You may provide some good insight for Chris, Jackie, and me as we discern who will get our vote.
Click on the names to read their resume and essays.

Tasting the Bread of Angels, Adult Formation, May 27, 9:45am:
Barbara Taylor Brown is an Episcopal priest whose many collections of sermons are presented in her books. This book, Bread of Angels, was described as follows: “…day by day God continues to be made known to us in the simple things that sustain our lives”. We will take one of her sermons and reflect on her message as it applies to our life and to our gratitude for the sacrifices of our soldiers as we enter this Memorial Day weekend. Bible 101 at St. Nicholas
Want to learn more about the Bible but don’t know where to start? Looking for a way to study scripture that is thoughtful and applicable? On Monday, May 7 at 10:00am, we will have an organizational meeting to talk about a new Bible Study at St. Nicholas. The class will probably start weekly in June. All are welcome–those who are well-versed in the Bible and those who have never opened it before! For more information, contact Fr. Jeff at fatherjeff@stnicholashamilton.org.
Welcome Our Newest Episcopalians!

Say hello to St. Nicholas’ newest members! On Sunday afternoon, Bob Hamilton and Barbara Walker were received into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church and David Walker reaffirmed his baptismal vows. They were among 200 people who were either confirmed, reaffirmed, or received at Sunday’s service in Atlanta. As was reported in this week’s Connecting:
The April 29 diocesan confirmation service at the Cathedral of St. Philip filled the nave to the brim — balcony seating too — with more than 1,000 people. Bishop of Atlanta J. Neil Alexander was assisted by the Rt. Rev. Frank Allan in confirming and receiving more than 200 new Episcopalians. Photo below: Bill Monk View more photos here. Read more

The Summer Chapel Band from Highlands, North Carolina will be back with us at St. Nicholas on Sunday, May 6. This year they are playing both services at 8:30am and 11:00am. In between will be a brunch catered by some of St. Nicholas’ finest chefs! If you haven’t heard the band play before, you’re in for a real treat. They will play several of America’s favorite hymns like “I’ll Fly Away,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and one that is particularly relevant to St. Nicholas, “Church in the Wildwood!” It’s a festive and celebratory service of Holy Eucharist and everyone is invited! In fact, spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers, as it’s a great way to introduce them to our congregation.
