Sam RoneyEpiscopal 101 Thursday, July 21, 6:30pm

This month’s Episcopal 101 will focus on music! Sam Roney, our music director, will lead the class to inform you on our musical tradition in the Episcopal Church and at St. Nicholas and to get your thoughts on how music is important to you in worship. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sing in this session! All are welcome!

Are you new to St. Nicholas? Are you new to the Episcopal style of faith and worship? Are you a long- time Episcopalian who needs a jumpstart on why we do things the way we do them? Then you need to join our Episcopal 101 class! This monthly class is a perfect place to learn more about our church and what makes us unique as Episcopalians. Each month, we explore different topics that are important to us. If you are thinking about becoming an Episcopalian, this class is very important. If you want more information, please contact Fr. Jeff.

bccvb.jpgWe are jumping right back in to another year of Episcopal 101 this Thursday, January 20 at 6:30pm at the church!

As you may or may not know, E101 is a monthly class for newcomers, those seeking to be baptized, confirmed, received from another denomination, or reaffirmed in their faith, or long-time Episcopalians who need a refresher. E101 is intended to be a jump-on/jump-off type of class, so every month, we focus on a different topic, so if you have never joined us before, every class is easy to jump in, and if you’ve missed a few, you can always jump back on easily.

It’s a great way to get to know other new folks to St. Nicholas as well and plug you in to the life of the church.

We typically meet the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30pm and cover a variety of topics like History of the Episcopal Church, Sacraments, Worship, Bible, and the Prayer Book.

This month, we’ll be talking about how St. Nicholas emerged in Harris County and you’ll hear the story from John and Charlotte Winsness, who were around in those days. We’ll also talk about how St. Nicholas works and our structure.

Hope you can all join us for another great year!

So what is God calling you to do?

That’s the topic of conversation this week at Episcopal 101! Episcopal 101 is a class for all inquiring minds, whether you are a long-time Episcopalian or if you are brand new to St. Nicholas. Feel free to invite discerning friends, confused relatives, or puzzled co-workers who wonder what you mean when you say you’re an Episcopalian. All ages are invited, as this class doubles as confirmation and baptism preparation.

Episcopal 101 meets this Thursday, August 19 at 6:30pm at the church! Hope to see you there!

After a break last month, Episcopal 101 returns on Thursday, July 15 at 6:30pm. Episcopal 101 is a class for newcomers, people who are wanting to become more serious about their commitment to Christ and the church, and for people who need a refresher. People are welcome to jump on and off as they please, however, if you wish to be confirmed, received, or reaffirmed, you must complete 9 of the 12 classes each year. The next date for confirmation at the Cathedral is December 12.

Sign up for the classes online at stnicholashamilton.org/signup or on the sign-up board at the church. We will continue to use the book My Faith, My Life for teenagers and the companion book Your Faith, Your Life for adults, which are both $11.00.

On Thursday, we’ll be talking about the Church and will ponder the question, “Why should I be an Episcopalian?” All are welcome!

This Thursday at 6:30pm we will have our next Episcopal 101 class. We’ll be exploring part 2 of our look at the Bible by discussing the New Testament. If you have any question about how the New Testament was formed, what all is in it, or any other questions about the New Testament, please join us!

Episcopal 101 is for all-comers: those who are questioning their faith, those who want to learn more about their existing faith, those who are new to St. Nicholas and those who are long-time members, young or old, those who wish to be confirmed or join St. Nicholas, and so on. It’s a great thing to invite your friends to, so they can learn about the Episcopal Church, as well.

Make adult education part of your New Year’s Resolution! In 2010, we have a new course for adults and a continuation of our already-offered opportunites.

First, we will begin a new series of courses beginning in January at our newly dubbed St. Nicholas Academy! Many of you are very hungry for continued Christian education for adults and with our Academy, we hope to provide just that.

In January, we will begin a 6-week study entitled Listening to Scripture: Strategies for Interpreting the Bible. This course is published as part of a program called Kerygma (Greek for “proclamation”). I used one of these curricula in a former parish and got a great response. The St. Nicholas Academy will be on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm starting January 5, 2010. Sue Halmrast and Fr. Jeff will lead the first course. All are welcome to attend the class. Required Resource Books will cost $18 per student, and you will need a study Bible like the Oxford Annotated Bible (NRSV) or the HarperCollins Study Bible (NRSV). To sign up for the first 6-week course, visit stnicholashamilton.org/signup or the signup board at the church. Read more
