The Hiking/Walking Priest

“Are you still hiking, Fr. Jeff?”
Confession time. The answer is “not as much.” While I certainly love to get up on the Pine Mountain Trail, I’ve allowed my calendar to overtake my hiking time. I used to start my Monday mornings with a 2-3 hour hike, but since adding Grey to the family, adding Bronwyn to school, and adding Katie to the staff, these hikes have become few and far between. Having an administrative assistant has been a tremendous help, so I find that having her allows more time in visiting people, and sometimes Monday mornings work better for folks. That’s not a complaint by any means, as this has only enhanced my ministry at St. Nicholas, but it does change my frequency of hiking. Read more

Lenten Hope Chests at St. Nicholas
As a central part of our outreach ministry, we will conduct a hope chest campaign during Lent to collect funds for Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD). Through FOCUS, CVEM, and other organizations, we are deeply involved in our local community. The hope chest campaign is our primary effort to help fight extreme poverty and disease around the world.
We will distribute the hope chests to both children and adults on February 26, the first Sunday in Lent. In addition we will distribute coupons to guide daily deposits to the hope chests and help us learn about the world’s needs. Each of the coupons will remind us of a luxury or blessing enjoyed in the US in contrast to corresponding needs or conditions in other parts of the world. In thanksgiving and remembrance of those in need, each coupon suggests an amount of change to put in the hope chest for that day. The amounts will be geared to children and adults are encouraged to give more when able. Read more

The following is from my monthly column on Comicattack.net called Comics Are My Religion. I wrote it back in Lent, but it still applies.
Welcome to Comics Are My Religion, a look at theology through the lens of comic books. There are some basic ground rules about engaging in respectful dialog about religion in this column. Be warned, if you haven’t read the comics discussed below, you might want to go read it and come back, as this column may contain spoilers!
Everyone loves Spider-Man. Well, I’m sure most of you do. Perhaps the reason Spider-Man is such a popular character is because of the reader’s ability to relate to him. We have all experienced juggling too many jobs, or not having enough money to pay for things, or relationship issues. Or maybe we’ve been trashed publicly by someone when we know that we were in the right. When we see Spidey struggling to do these things on top of saving the world, it provides a connecting point to each of us and we immediately know what it must feel like to have the weight of the world on our shoulders. Below you’ll find a brief liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer called Daily Devotion, as well as the readings for today. Choose one reading to focus on, or if you want, read all three. Pace yourself. Don’t blow through the readings or the prayers. Ponder them. Ask yourself what God might be trying to say to you at this very moment. If you have questions about the meaning of a text, or the context, e-mail me or comment below.
