Ash Wednesday

Don’t forget that next Wednesday, March 9, is Ash Wednesday!

Our full Ash Wednesday liturgy will be at 6:30 p.m. with the Imposition of Ashes. This is the beginning of our journey through the season of Lent. We are reminded of our humanity and our creation. As the ashes are imposed, we hear “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” It’s a beautiful liturgy and I encourage you all to attend.

However, if you can’t come to the liturgy at 6:30, I will be available in the Nave of the church between the hours of 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. to offer a brief liturgy for Ash Wednesday. It is also a good time, if you wish, to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation, aka Confession. You may be carrying something of which you want to let go, and while I am available at any time to hear such confessions, I will specifically be available on Ash Wednesday.

So enter into another holy season of Lent by participating on Ash Wednesday!

Praying for ALL Saints

We will celebrate All Saints Day this Sunday, November 7! We will once again be gathering in front of the church and processing to the Memory Garden at the beginning of both services (weather permitting) to remember the many saints of our lives that have gone on into glory.

Please help us by e-mailing the full names of anyone you would particularly like to remember on that day to Fr. Jeff at fatherjeff@stnicholashamilton.org.

Remember to change your clocks back an hour on Saturday night before you go to bed as Daylight Savings Time ends!

Also, our Adult Formation class this Sunday will feature the Rev. Donna Gafford in the first of her two-part series on the Life and Work of St. Paul. After a short introduction to St. Paul’s life, we will explore the development of key theological issues that appear in his letters primarily by looking directly at the letters and considering their content. If you are interested in the New Testament, this class is for you!

Fourth of July Service This Sunday!

This Sunday at our 10:00am service, we will celebrate our Independence Day with a festive and patriotic liturgy! The American flag will process in as we sing our favorite patriotic hymns such as God Of Our Fathers, My Country ‘Tis Of Thee, O Beautiful For Spacious Skies (America The Beautiful), & A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.

Our Book of Common Prayer has special readings and prayers for this occasion, and we will include them this Sunday as well.

We are also hoping to purchase our own American flag and Episcopal flag to display in the narthex. If you would like to help us reach this goal, please donate through PayPal at the top right of the screen or send a check in to St. Nicholas at 69 Mobley Road, Hamilton, GA 31811 (and be sure to designate your gift to our flag fund).

So before you break out the fireworks and fire up the grill, come worship with us on this special day!

Pentecost is coming…

As we approach the Day of Pentecost on May 31 (I know, can you believe it?) I ask if you would like to join in the tradition of reading the gospel in various languages, during the service on that day.

This is in keeping with the experience of the disciples on the first day of Pentecost when the Spirit descended and they proclaimed the Gospel in many languages. You would be responsible for getting a copy of the lesson in the language of your choice.

When it is time to read the gospel, everyone stands and, staying in your place, you would read from the gospel of John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 (this is a change from the earlier e-mail to the congregation!) in the language of your choice.   Then I will read the Gospel in English.
Please respond if you’d like to participate. Also, remember that on that day, it is customary to wear red to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirit that lights upon the disciples’ heads. See you then!
