Pentecost at St. Nicholas

The Holy Spirit was in full sight on May 23, which was Pentecost Sunday. The congregation celebrated by wearing red to commemorate the liturgical color of the day. The choir began the service with the anthem Spirit of the Living God, and later sang Every Time I Feel the Spirit at the Offertory. All the music Sam prepared was great! We brought out our “dove” and “flame” kites which symbolized the Holy Spirit zooming into the presence of the gathered disciples. Bobo Morgan once again hung our gigantic Pentecost banners from the front of the church. After the service, we released red balloons into the sky, as we recalled the Spirit’s guidance as we all go out to spread God’s love into the world. It was a fantastic day!

Special thanks to Lynn Hall for capturing Pentecost in the pictures below.

Today was a wonderful day at St. Nicholas. We were all empowered by the Holy Spirit, graced by the music of organ and saxophone, honored by the ministry of Ralph Livingston, saddened by the departure of our friends Briana and Kaitlyn, and inspired by the grace and music of Pat Newton.

Pentecost is coming…

As we approach the Day of Pentecost on May 31 (I know, can you believe it?) I ask if you would like to join in the tradition of reading the gospel in various languages, during the service on that day.

This is in keeping with the experience of the disciples on the first day of Pentecost when the Spirit descended and they proclaimed the Gospel in many languages. You would be responsible for getting a copy of the lesson in the language of your choice.

When it is time to read the gospel, everyone stands and, staying in your place, you would read from the gospel of John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 (this is a change from the earlier e-mail to the congregation!) in the language of your choice.   Then I will read the Gospel in English.
Please respond if you’d like to participate. Also, remember that on that day, it is customary to wear red to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirit that lights upon the disciples’ heads. See you then!
