Glorious Trinity Sunday!

This past Sunday was quite a fantastic day! We were visited by our Assistant Bishop, the Right Reverend Keith Whitmore, and his wife Suzie and we welcomed 7 people into the Episcopal Church. Bill Caudill, Cora Coverson, Ona Graham, Ralph Graham, Carolyn Jacik, Judy Jacik, and Heather Roper were all received in the Episcopal Church through the laying on of hands by Bishop Whitmore. After the jam-packed service, the congregation celebrated with cake and fellowship. It was quite a glorious Trinity Sunday and we thank everyone who was there!

A Spirit-Filled Church

Last Sunday, St. Nicholas once again celebrated the day of Pentecost with style! Members of the congregation wore red to symbolize the flames of the Holy Spirit that came upon the apostles. Our acolytes Abby Crowley and Rylie Brumley came in swinging the red and orange kites while Fr. Jeff swung the Holy Spirit dove kite as a way to show the Spirit’s presence in our midst. After hearing Acts 2:1-21, we had a bit of reenactment of the Pentecost story, as Sheila Dixon, Amy Nerone, and Norma Wolff all read the Gospel lesson (John 20:19-23) in German, French, and Spanish respectfully. After the service everyone grabbed a red balloon (were there 99?) and launched them into the air as a symbol of our call to continue the work of Christ in the world.
Many thanks to everyone who made the day possible, especially Linda Sawyer, our Worship liaison on the Vestry, who made all the preparations. Here are some shots of the day by Lynn Hall and Drucye Robinson.
The Week In Pics

Lots of great things went on this week at St. Nicholas!
First, on Thursday night, a huge table of folks packed into El Carrizo in Columbus for a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Many thanks to Joe and Kathie Torres for setting up the Out & About group this month.
Then, on Saturday, another group headed over to Talbotton to help out with cleaning and repairs of Zion Episcopal Church. The 163-year-old building continually needs some TLC, and many St. Nicholas folks, along with people from around the Diocese of Atlanta gathered to provide some. Many thanks to Heather Roper, Bill Caudill, and Doug and Peggy Martin for their hard work!
Finally, we had an amazing worship experience on Sunday with our friends from the Summer Chapel Band in Highlands, North Carolina. Led by Mark Lassiter, this group played our favorite hymns while we danced, clapped, and sang our hearts out! You may not know it, but the banjo player, Charles Wood, is a two-time world champion banjo player who played with Earle Scruggs and Steve Martin on David Letterman a few years ago.
Many thanks to Lynn Hall for all the great shots! If you can’t see the thumbnails, click on the picture anyway to see it.

Epiphany Party Photos!

We had a wonderful evening last Friday night for our first Epiphany party. We invited the entire church, plus some other friends and neighbors, and had a blast! The house was packed with 70 guests in every nook and cranny. The amount of food was staggering, with a feast set before us. It was a fun evening, and we hope to host the parish again at our house in the future. Molly and I are so blessed to have our home in which we can host such events. In fact, it was on the day of Epiphany last year where we first found our Hill Street house!
Thank you to everyone who came, and everyone who brought food and drinks. Thank you especially to Molly who organized the whole party!

Hamilton MLK Day Parade

Join us on Monday, January 17, 2011 at 11:30am for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Hamilton! We meet at the Performance Learning Center (which is the old middle school) in Hamilton.
Last year, 15 marchers from St. Nicholas gathered under a beautiful sunny sky to march in the 2010 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade. We were greeted by everyone we saw and many were surprised and joyful at our presence. We carried our processional cross, the St. Nicholas banner, and colorful kites as we made our way through the streets of Hamilton.
St. Nicholas is proud to be the only “traditionally white” congregation (although our congregation is wonderfully arrayed with people from all races and colors) that marches in the parade. We have now marched in the parade two years, and have been welcomed whole-heartedly both years.
As one marcher said, “We’re all going to spend eternity together, we might as well start being together now!”
As an added bonus, last year, Fr. Jeff was honored to be asked to pray the opening prayer at the annual MLK Day Program following the parade at Harris County High School. “Ignite the flame of unity in each of our hearts,” he prayed. May it be so.
Here are some pics from last year’s parade!
