Hunger Walk in Atlanta
March 8, 2011 by fatherjeff
Attention St. Nicholas Youth! Our youth intern, Cami Fanning, is organizing a trip up to Atlanta this Sunday right after church for the 2011 Hunger Walk.
Adults and youth are welcome to carpool up to the event where folks will walk with other Episcopalians to help eradicate hunger! If you would like to go, e-mail Cami by Wednesday.
Here’s more info on the Hunger Walk:
When: Sunday, March 13, 2011
Where: Green Lot at Turner Field
Time: Registration at 12:00 noon. 5K Run and Walk start at 2:00 pm. (Park closes 4:00 pm)
Who: Episcopalians from across the Diocese of Atlanta join together each spring to help hungry neighbors in our communities. Your participation can help the thousands of families who experience poverty in our state.
Why: In Georgia 20.1 percent of Georgia’s children live in poverty – that’s nearly half a million children under age 18. Nearly 1.4 million Georgians (14.7%) are living in poverty. This is the equivalent of 26 sold out games at Turner Field. 11.9 percent - more than one in every ten senior citizens in Georgia - is living in poverty.
PARKING IS FREE! All walkers and runners are encouraged to park in the Turner Field Blue Lot to avoid crossing the street. The Blue Lot is just above the Green Lot where the event is held on Capitol Avenue.
Registration begins at noon – Come early to check out the new ECF tent and greet friends from around the diocese. Kids of all ages can enjoy entertainment, food and games before the walk and run begin. The Run and Walk will take you through downtown Atlanta - a terrific way to see the city.
Note About Pets
Due to liability concerns and Turner Field policies we are not allowed to have family pets at the Hunger Walk. Service animals are, of course, welcome.
How to Get Involved
For over 25 years, Episcopal Charities Foundation has joined the Hunger Walk/Run in uniting participants of all ages and athletic backgrounds to support hunger and poverty relief. Over 11,000 participants come together each March to raise more than $400,000. It is the largest single fundraiser for Episcopal Charitiesand its work to fight hunger throughout middle and north Georgia.
T-Shirt
All walkers who raise or contribute $25 or more will receive a free Hunger Walk/Run t-shirt on the day of the walk. If you’re a runner, your registration fee entitles you to a t-shirt the day of the event. Once you complete your registration print out a copy of your confirmation and bring it with you on March 13th to receive your Hunger Walk/Run t-shirt.
Set your goal
The more funds you collect, the better we can all serve our communities. Hundreds of programs, including many supported by Episcopal Charities, that feed the hungry count on the Hunger Walk/Run so they can continue to serve those in need. These include food pantries, community kitchens, shelters, afterschool programs and senior centers.
Our best advice for successful fundraising? Pray. And then ask EVERYONE you know - friends, family, business colleagues, neighbors, classmates, fellow parishioners and more. Don’t forget your social networks like Facebook and Twitter - they’re great ways to let people know you’re participating in the Hunger Walk/Run on behalf of Episcopal Charities and that you’d like their support! Remember … no donation is too large or small. Each one helps Episcopal Charities feed hungry people across the Diocese of Atlanta.

…to fellowship. Join the Out & About Group Friday night at 8:15 at the Marriott in Columbus for a spooky good time at the Ghost Tour. Bring $13 and good walking shoes. For more info, contact Lynn Hall.
…to serve. Come out on Saturday morning and help with a Fall Work Day. We will be meeting at the church on October 23 from 9:00 to 12:00. Please bring clippers, rakes, trimmers or anything you can think of that will be needed. If you have them, remember to mark with your name to be sure to get them back at completion. We also will need a few ladders to help remove cobwebs from the front entrance. Work gloves are recommended especially for those who will be weeding. For more info, contact Chris Butzon or Heather Roper.
…to worship. Sunday morning at 10:00am we will be welcoming Grace and Kathryn Metsinger into the household of God through the sacrament of baptism. Grace and Kathryn are the 13-and 10-year-old daughters of Jackie and Chris Lintner. Be there to voice your “WE WILL” as agree to support these two girls on their journey with Christ.
…to be generous. Also on Sunday morning is our Rally Day! We will have one service at 10:00am to kick off our 2011 Stewardship Campaign. We will be giving everyone pledge cards which includes what you plan to give back to God in terms of your time, talent, and treasure. We will also have a Ministry Fair after the service with a light lunch to give everyone a chance to sign up for the various ministries of the church. We need your help to meet our goals, so please plan on attending this very important day.
…to have fun. Youth Group will be meeting at the church at 5:00pm for fun, games, and some lively discussion. For more info, contact Cami Fanning.
There are a lot of opportunities at St. Nicholas! Come join us!!!
Youth Four Square Tournament

The 2nd Annual Diocese of Atlanta Youth Four Square Tournament will take place at St. Paul’s in Newnan Sunday afternoon. Last year, we took a group up and had a fantastic time!
The plan is to leave the church around 1:30 and return around 7:15. We will have dinner there. The cost is $5 per person. The youth at St. Paul’s suggested that each team come with a theme (JAWS!) so if anyone wants to design a t-shirt for us, let our youth intern, Cami Fanning, know ASAP!
This Past Weekend In Pics

There was a lot going on at St. Nicholas this past weekend. Luckily, we had some cameras handy and captured some shots.
First, on Thursday evening, Sheila Dixon invited folks over to her house for a delicious dinner and some Lobsterfest preparations. The group made hand fans to hand out at Lobsterfest in case it gets hot, which is has the last few years. It was a great group who engaged in some great conversation as they worked. Many hands make short work, so before we knew it, we were done! Another group wrapped silverware on Saturday at the church, but we didn’t get any pictures of them. There has been a lot of hard work that has gone into Lobsterfest, and one of the best things is the new friendships that have been made! Thanks to Lynn Hall for these pictures, and for everyone who came out to work on the fans and the silverware.

Our next youth event is September 12th right after church! We’re going hiking in Providence Canyon. This will be a 3-4 hour hike and it may be pretty hot so bring a water bottle. Make sure you wear hiking-appropriate clothes. The hike is free but bring $10 for food as we may grab some dinner on the way back depending on what time we finish. Please RSVP to youth intern Cami Fanning at cameran.fanning@gmail.com by next Wednesday, September 8th! Feel free to bring your friends and encourage your fellow youth members to sign up! We’ll be leaving around 12:30 or 1:00. Adult drivers are needed, so if you can help out, e-mail Cami.
